I took a different path this week. Thanks again to Madison Woods and Friday Fictioneers. I’m dedicating this story to my friend Teddy whose love of her Native American heritage is an inspiration.

“Walk with me now,” said Wind Woman.

Red Fawn could not hide her impatience. Following in obeisant silence behind her mother she dreamed only of her beautiful warrior. Of all the girls in her clan, he chose her.

At the top of the hill the older woman pointed to two burial mounds. “When we found them, he was dead. She laid you in my arms. Then she died.”

Wind Woman’s eyes brimmed. She pressed her palms against Red Fawn’s cheeks. “Hair like fire. Eyes like sky. The Great Spirit gave you to me. Tomorrow I give you to Iron Wolf.”

  • I think Red Fawn knew she was adopted but might not have known the whole story. Or she might have been impatient because she's heard the story over and over. But it takes on new meaning on the eve of her wedding. Incidentally, in my mind the white parents were not murdered by Native Americans.

  • A touching and well-told story, Rochelle. A sort of "giving of the bride moment." I like it.Thanks for visiting mine. Here's the link for othershttp://russellgayer.blogspot.com/

  • That is a beautiful story Rochelle. I really like this. Very well told, with meaning and good images. Mine was just posted a few moments ago. It has been a traumatic week for us here with the High Park fire that has consumed over 55,000 acres in northern Colorado and about 4 acres of that were mine and Wayne's lot at Glacier View Meadows 32 mi. northwest of Fort Collins. We have/had parked our Airstream trailer and a storage building up there. Have had our property there for over 20 yrs. So, a very emotional time for us this week. I posted a story about the fire with pictures we took a week ago on my blog yesterday, where you can see that too. Joyce http://jemj47.wordpress.com

  • Hi Rochelle: Love the name she was given: Red Fawn…(red hair and blue eyes). And what a lovely tribute to your friend, Teddy. I'm sure she is thrilled. Thanks for reading mine.

  • Beautiful, Rochelle, and a very nice tribute to your friend. My mind is filling up with the back story on your flash fiction.–Janhttp://janmorrill.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/flashfriday-fictioneers-mos-shadow/

  • Red Fawn knows she's adopted. She's most likely heard Wind Woman's story many times in her life I believe she's in love with Iron Wolf. But it's he who has chosen her. I think I'll be expanding on this one in the not too distant future. I'm totally in love with these two women.
